In the latest edition of the Slagwerkkrant (the Dutch trade magazine for drummers) there is a nice article about my teaching method for pop drums 360DRUMSbook (two books, audio, video & app). Mark Eeftens describes in a beautiful way why these books are so very useful, for every drummer and drum teacher. Thank you very much Mark!

“The smart thing about the audio tracks is that they really do build up from slower tempo’s where you learn the fastest and most thoroughly … the rhythms contain many variations and patterns that you need in daily playing practice … they start simple but are ultimately bold and challenging … so no bookmarks or long texts but practice and apply immediately! “- Mark Eeftens

creativity & messing up the right way

It is not easy to become a good drummer. Try to play the exercises well, becoming faster, integrate more and more techniques, play more and more variations, get better control over the muscles. And let’s not forget steadyness and volume control…

But creativity is a difficult quality, one that we can hardly train specifically. Taking risks, experimenting and making mistakes is the best route for this.

To show you how I do it… I have taken 2 chapters from Book of Fills (3.1 and 3.3), chosen a feel (even/triplet/bluesrock) and started to jam… Watch some of these 4 video’s & I hope you get inspired to do the same!

finding your best route through the books

Every drumbook is written in a specific order, some start easily and become more and more difficult, other books are divided into categories so you can determine your ideal route yourself. The books for 360DRUMS are part of that second group. In the book I present 3 different routes, where my favorite is the 3rd. This article helps you to understand a bit more about this ‘custom’ route.
